Why PPF Costs Vary So Much
Two quotes for the same car can be far apart. The difference is rarely the installer's margin alone. It usually comes down to the factors below.
Film material: TPU vs PVC and low-grade TPU
Much of the PPF material cost comes down to what the film is made of. Lower-cost films are often PVC or low-grade TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane). They tend to be stiffer, less clear and quicker to yellow in strong sun. Premium films use high-performance TPU, often aliphatic TPU, which stays flexible, absorbs small impacts from stones and road debris, and resists yellowing better. Better TPU costs more to make, which is one of the main reasons TPU PPF costs more than PVC film. Ultra Nano Shield films are TPU films.
Top coat: self-healing and hydrophobic
The top coat matters too. A self-healing top coat lets light swirl marks fade with heat from the sun or warm water, and a hydrophobic top coat helps water bead and roll off so the car stays cleaner between washes. Both add to the cost of making the film, which is why self-healing PPF usually costs more than basic film. Check the product page or ask an authorised installer which top coat a specific film has.
Thickness: mil and microns explained
PPF thickness is quoted in microns (µm) or in mil (thousandths of an inch). One mil is 25.4 microns, so a 200 µm film is about 7.9 mil. When you see 210 micron or 230 micron PPF advertised, that is roughly 8.3 mil and 9.1 mil.
Thicker film usually costs more because it uses more material, and it can add some impact resistance. But thickness is not the same as quality. A thick film made from poor material can still yellow, crack or peel, while a slightly thinner film made from good TPU, with a quality top coat and adhesive, can outlast it. Judge a film on its material, clarity, top coat, warranty and installation, not on microns alone. If thickness matters to you, ask the installer for the film's spec sheet. Coverage area and car size
More film and more labour means a higher cost. A front kit protects the high-impact panels, while full body covers every painted panel. A large SUV or pickup needs far more film than a small hatchback, and complex shapes such as sculpted bumpers, large air intakes and sharp body lines take longer to fit. You can also protect high-wear areas on their own: door edges, door cups, the boot or trunk loading area, pillars and rocker panels.
Installer labour and preparation
Labour is a big part of any PPF installation cost. A careful job includes washing and decontaminating the paint, correcting swirls and scratches before the film goes on (PPF locks in whatever is underneath), working in a dust-controlled bay, cutting and aligning each panel precisely, and wrapping edges so they don't lift. Paint correction is often charged separately, so check whether your quote includes it. Warranty and brand support
A longer warranty usually comes with a higher-grade film, because the brand is standing behind it for longer. What matters is what the warranty covers and whether you can actually claim it. Ask what is covered (for example yellowing, cracking or peeling), what is excluded and how a claim works before you book.
Finish: clear, matte and gloss black
Clear gloss film is the most common choice because it keeps the factory look. Matte film such as TPU Matte gives a gloss car a satin, matte finish, and gloss black colour film such as Glossy Black TPU is often used to black out panels such as the roof or pillars. Speciality finishes usually cost more than clear film.
How Car Size and Type Affect PPF Cost

Front Kit vs Full Body vs Partial PPF
Coverage is the factor you control most directly. More panels means more film and more labour, so the cost rises from partial to front kit to full body.

Is PPF Worth It?
PPF is worth it when the protection it gives over its warranty period is worth more to you than the alternatives: repainting chipped bonnets and bumpers, polishing out scratches, and the effect of tired paint on resale value.
A simple way to compare quotes is to look at what each one costs per year of written warranty: divide each quote by the warranty years the installer puts in writing. A higher quote for a film with a longer warranty can work out better value than a low quote for a film with a short one. How to Get an Accurate PPF Quote
Before you compare quotes, make sure every one answers the same questions:
- Film brand and exact model code (for example, A210, not just "premium PPF")
- Thickness, from the film's spec sheet
- Warranty: how many years, what it covers, and whether it is registered in your name
- Coverage map: exactly which panels are included
- Paint correction: included or extra?

- Time and aftercare: how long the car stays at the studio and how to care for the film afterwards
How to Avoid Fake PPF
Counterfeit and relabelled film is a real risk, and it often shows up as an unusually cheap "branded" quote. Before installation, check that the film comes in sealed packaging with the brand and model printed on it, ask for the warranty to be registered in your name, and buy through authorised installers.
